Boys Climbing Ladders in Trees

,

and climbing in trees without ladders

Allen and Tommy (a friend whose staying in a camper on our land) took some trees down, where our future pasture will be, on Sunday. It is amazing how big the roots are on some of them, especially the sweetgums. I have to say I am really glad to see the sweetgums go. They drop those little balls of spikes all over the yard. I know they have their place and I believe they are a native species but the only place I like to see them is deep in the woods somewhere.
The boys and I finally got outside for a while today to view the downed trees and the tremendous roots. They had a good time playing on the branches. After climbing all over the trees for awhile we took a walk to my husband's food plot (for the deer). The boys love to play there. Today they climbed ladders in trees. It's hard for me to see them climb so far up- I'm so proud they can climb so high and be so brave but a part of me just wants to throw up when I see them so high.

getting started

Well here it goes- my first blog entry. I'm excited to get this started. I guess I'll start by telling about the farm. We have 30 acres in a rural area of Georgia we're about 45 minutes southeast of Atlanta. We have lived here about 6 years. My husband, Allen has a full time job as a heating and air subcontractor. We have 3 boys-
Logan 8, Evan 6 and Jared 4 who are homeschooled.
Since most of our land is wooded our main focus right now is clearing and planning. We do have a moderate size family garden that I have been adding leaves to amend the soil. I also hope to start some shiitake mushroom logs in the next couple of weeks. We also have chickens- 15 or so layers and lots of bantams (small chickens. I am getting close to 6 eggs a day now, this spring I hope to have enough eggs to start selling at a local market.
It has rained here the past 2 days so I haven't been able to rake. I did get to go fabric shopping yesterday without the boys. It was really nice. I also scored some fabric at the local Goodwill. Have a look...
